On Giving

Have written and dedicated a couple of posts earlier on the topic of Giving.

But here is my dear mother’s philosophical perspectives where she focuses on the the spiritual mindset in giving.

Dhaanam

There is a saying in Tamil.” What ur right hand gives, the left hand should not know”. True. While giving, unknowingly a little superiority, seeps in. To counter our ego secrecy n humility is needed. Giving is called Dhaanam .

There are various types of giving. It can be of anything. Money, used unwanted items like clothes or other durables, food items, even sharing ur knowledge is a form of giving.

Rules of Dhaanam

Giving new unused things of good quality is the best Dhaanam. This is followed in ritualistic or religious dhaanam.
Always give with humility. Never show attitude.
Give to worthy persons. Donate to needy ones. Giving shoes to a legless person is useless .It will hurt the person reminding his disability. There is a saying ‘pathiram arindhu pichai idu. ‘

While donating unwanted used items see that it can be useful for atleast six months or further. Never give throw away things.

Give happily, with full heart. Anything given with a prayer in mind and lots of good will at heart will bring prosperity and happiness to both the giver and receiver.

Another important aspect of giving is never to boast or keep on reminding them . Once given it ceases to be yours. . The recipient has all the freedom to use it the way they want. Do not expect a life long gratitude .

Taittriya Upanishad says

Give with faith
Give with sensitivity
Give with abundance
Give with understanding

In Bhagavat Gita, Shri Krishna talks about 3 types of Dhaanam
namely Satvic, Rajasic and Thamasic.

Satvic is the one which is given to worthy persons with full humility and without expecting returns in any form.

Rajasic is the one which is given to show supremacy or expecting some favour in return.

Thamasic is the one where one gives with attitude, without respect to place n time to undeserving persons.

Vedas describes dhaanam of 4 categories.
1. Nitya dhaanam which is given daily as part of our routine without expectation.
2 Nymithika dhaanam is giving with the intention to wash away our sins.
3 Kamya dhaanam is giving with a desire to achieve some special favours.
4. Vimala dhaanam is giving with humility, devotion and without expectation of any returns.

The best dhanams are
Anna dhaanam -. Feeding the poor( It satisfies)
Vidya dhaanam Sharing ur knowledge and skill. (It increases)
Kanya dhaanam – giving a daughter in marriage. (I think it’s about letting go of a child be it a son or daughter into their next phase of life)
Raktha dhaanam and organ dhanam-. Saving one’ s life.

Keep giving.
Give whole heartedly.
Give with a smile.

Anjana

I would simply also like to add that

True giving is when you dont feel the weight of parting in the giving.

You never know how many lives you are unknowingly touching.

God is…

In the pulse of life
In the heartbeat of love
In the bareness of our soul
In the strength of our being

In the silence of prayer
In the vividity of the now
Betwixt and between
Everything and nothingness

Above and Around
Spaces here and beyond
Enveloping Time and timelessness
In the sound of soundlessness

In the question and the answer
In the truth of life and living
In the hope of the being
In you and in me!
God is!

Untold stories

So many stories

Echoing through the eras

Etched in the sands of time.

So many patterns formed in the living

A proof of things that were

And shaped by the situations

In the challenges of life

That was, is and will be.

“The patterns are never random but a part of a history signifying the survival mode.”

Sing the song of approval!

Years of conditioning
May often bring the habit of self criticism
Avoid self sabotaging the self
Often times we try to be too self righteous for our own good!
This makes way for a certain self doubt and self denial that disrupts our growth.

We are human and truly let us be so
We have our foibles and our feats to own up to.
We can accept the applause with dignity of being in a simple thank you!
We have no necessity to act small, helpless or defensive in every moment.

We are best serving ourselves
When we begin to express the potential in our being
Often we cover down in fear of being judged or criticized
Know this world is large enough for us all and more
Each of us must play our part in living here

We are all entitled to a life of dignity and we need to sense that in our being.
So let us change our song
From criticism to approval
And watch the change this single act of deliberation
Can bring about in your own life as well as in others around you
Watch the positive transformations
Through these three simple acts
Approve Appreciate and Applaud!

Walk the path…

My reflections on this beautiful picture….
Sun kissed leaves shine like gold
Majestic tall trees lined with wisdom untold
A winding woody path so green
emerges in between …
It beckons you onto a journey to the unknown
Yet with the radiant light of the sun leading you on
You know for sure you will never lose your way
Basking in the beautiful morning suns ray ….
Walk the path … befriend nature and dare
To accept the experiences, it’s ready to share
Live this moment, do not leave it for another day
awaiting when the sun shall shine this glorious way …
Cos Life is so much like this unknown path my friend
Make the journey as the sunshine around the bend
Trust yourself to be all you can be
And perhaps, its awaiting you … that which you wish to see!

Light after the night.

After deep pain arrives a great blessing
After heavy rain appears the rainbow

In toughest moments arrives a breakthrough
Through the biggest wave shines through a light.

The longest night awakens with the hope of new dawn.
The longest tunnel opens to beams of sunlight

In deepest silence may be hidden utmost reverence.
In deepest gratitude lies a heartfelt prayer

What is visible may be an illusion
What is invisible may be the truth!
