Dancing… Beyond Floor Craft

When I started listening to my inner calling, I realized all that which makes me happy to be in this present moment … makes me at my receptive, attentive, creative, connective, positive best.

At this juncture I guess the moment I feel most centred is the moment I connect with the art of dancing whether with words or movement … in whatsoever way possible. Be it in thoughts, action or deeds, like learning a new dance form practicing, teaching dance techniques to the interested, imparting a workshop, sharing a dance, creating new patterns or even writing about it!

Somehow a sense of serene alertness sets in and yet it manages to keep me in the state of joyous flow.

I realize this space to be my healing abode that which lets me be me, as expansive as I want to be! I am aware how much my connect with dancing is growing. I am thankful to those who have helped to be where I am … and hopefully evolving in the being!

We are all beautiful unique beings, and it is important to understand that which makes us unique is our distinct differences…

Likewise, with regard to partner dancing, there are many different perspectives as far as learning is concerned.

A Beginner Dance workshop

From Social Dancing (which I identify naturally with, possibly due to my own personal traits) to Show dancing at performances, an ideal platform for people who like to be at their theatrical , glamorous best and love to entertain, to Competitive dancing which would be ideal for those who would like a rigorous and vigorous , athletic approach to dance training, where the syllabus is watertight and there are judges to keep scores and evaluate your training in different levels and where there are certificates awarded for levels completed with proficiency in perfect execution of well-rehearsed patterns.

Each of these are beautiful pathways and has its own takers according to and as per the individual’s nature. The scope of each is very different and yet the health benefits are common to all with consistent practice.

But my point here is, that among them the important factor which differentiates Social dancing to choreographed sequences of the Exhibition and Show dancing and the Competition dances, lies in the expansion of the ability to accommodate , adjust and act according to the needs of the situation, which can be developed an applied very creatively in Social dancing … as you learn the art of partnering for e.g  to lead and follow, no matter what the age, gender, height, weight or proficiency level is.
This call’s for a heightened attentive response to stimulus …(average response time to a visual stimulus for the human brain is about 1.23 seconds or so for the human brain to body connection and response to happen).

Dancing socially is a natural way to bring out the creative potential in the dancers as there is no room for monotony to set in after a while, which could be possible in rigorous performance-based dance training, or with strict adherence to the syllabus in competition dances.

And yes … I love the fact that no longer is the old rigid viewpoint true of the leader being always in the lead and the follower always the follow … I hope to reach out and train and send out more people on the dance floor who realize the importance of equality in partner connections .. after all without a follower there can be no leader … I hope the word ‘Hijack ‘which technically could mean a follower taking over the job of the leading … is replaced with responsible ‘Alert Partnering ‘ which improvises the creative quotient of the dance partners …..and brings out the essence of great dancing!

Let us join hands to promote the simplicity of Dance a Spatial Art, for I do believe that it’s so much more than just a floor craft.

All across the world April 29th every year is celebrated as the International Dance Day… as I share this as a dedication  to the Art of Dance …do remember to keep the spirit of dance in your heart and keep on dancing!

To Dance…

To dance is to move with the strength of earth below you, sensing and knowing the grounding beneath you of your convictions.

To dance is to freely be able to improvise your physical and emotional self with the quality of fluidity like the flowing water.

To dance is to ignite the power of passion and fire up your creative movements.

To dance is to be able to glide as if you are as light as the air and soar in grace, as you feel the wind enveloping yet beckoning you to scale new heights of harmonious effusion while dancing with a conscious awareness of your edges and spaces that you occupy in this beautiful amazing world”

Age No Bar

To dance is to get in touch  with yourself.

To dance is to express yout own sense of rhythm.

To dance is to move from all of your heart.

To dance is to connect  with the inner child within.

To dance is so much more than the moves you do, it is to tune into your own being.

To dance is to  explore and express the connect you feel within you.

Socrates learned to dance when he was seventy because he felt that an essential part of himself had been neglected.

Age is no bar to learn to dance !

Do you dance?

This post is all about you!

Cos I would love to know more about you, my dear reader.

Would you be so kind as to share if you are fond of dancing…

Do you dance?

And if the music is right …

Would you prefer to dance solo or with a partner?

I do believe dancing from the heart has much to do with your wellbeing.

As a dance trainer over the years, I have come across many people to whom movement and music have made a huge difference in their lives.

Have always seen that it is not about the level or the intricacies of the steps or advanced techniques…

Rather it is about how you feel as you dance from within and how you make and leave another feeling even after the dance is over.

A few minutes of enjoyable dancing can leave lasting impressions on every cell of the being for the better.

Whatever the music or dance style that appeals to you the point is it integrates your healing mode and brings forth a positive transformation in the mind and body.

This is my humble attempt to bring the like-minded together and motivate you to take a step and dance some more.

As you dance you are creating health in and around you.

Do share if you feel dance has touched your life in any way…

Would be great to hear your insights and experiences.

Have shared many of my personal experiences over the years with my Dance for wellness workshops.

Dance Of Thoughts…

Can we ever quantify our thoughts
For thoughts have a speed of their own
Depending on so many variables
With our concept of time still subjective.

For thoughts travel through space
There are particles of matter there
Of which we know too little as yet
In the weft and warp of time immemorial.

Thoughts are invisible but palpable
Difficult to measure but relatable
For much can be thought
In half the time of a blink of the eye.

Every thought is a part of a cosmic pattern
A phenomenon beyond realms yet to be known
Surpassing the speeds unknown
With complexities of our own perceptions.

Out sense of intuition so profound in power.
And what to speak of deja vus & dreams
Or our imagination so infinite
Psychic revelations in time and space

Our jumbled thoughts in the heat of the moment
Our calm collected coherence
Our racing frenzy of feelings in chaos
All matter as they come along in time .

We may find it difficult to control our thoughts
But we can certainly choose what we do with them
For thoughts come and thoughts go
Depending in how you respond to them.

Align them to harmony with movements
Acknowledge their presence to let them go
Breathe in a little space around your thoughts
Sense the peace in between those pauses.

So breath a little deeper
As you think, sense & feel
Be one with your thoughts
Before you respond to them

Thoughts arise in life and living
As they are meant to do
And words come from a depth unknown
But Speech is a choice that you have!

The Dance of the Words

Like a pen striking words on a paper
The first draft there is much to write
But in the second there is discipline
As words are omitted to drive the point.

In the ensuing edits
There is order and structure
Helping matter get the message
In the conveyance of the creativity.

Like in art so in life
The dance goes on
Sometimes making a point
At times lost in translations.

The mood and setting may change
The course of improvisations
Sometimes blatantly
At times in all subtlety.

In depths of consciousness awareness
Arrive valuable insights
On spacing or styling
On perfecting the portraying
On emotions conveyed
On composition and construction
On overall content
Until the points are perfected
To express openly

Relentless as is our thoughts
Such is way of the words
Our imagination is infinite
All pervasive and expansive
And in all that’s said and done
There is much left unsaid
And yet while the words flow on
The dance goes on…

Our vibrance

Our universe is full of waves of energy. And all life is energy in varied forms .

In the subatomic level all is vibrational and moving .We are all pulsating oceans of energy fields. This very waves of energy is what makes us unique as we are in ourselves and in the way we interact with one another.

Sometimes these waves of energy are seemingly stagnant and at times moving in momentous speed.

Life is full of vibrations. Sometimes you sense its brilliance and at other times it is so subtle and subjective to our level of understanding at that point in life. Yet there are reasons for why you emit the vibrations that you do. And it’s all interconnected.

From the food, you eat your choices have a way of influencing your body and your body affects the way you feel and think.

Our thoughts have much to do with our emotions and thus the behaviour of every cell is affected in a relational way to another.

Some simple ways to raise your positive vibrations…

Walk outdoors

Smile and laugh more

Spend time in nature

Have a hobby

Support a cause

Exercise, dance & play

Listen to soothing music

Eat vegetables and fruits

Drink adequate water

Think well for one and all!

And most of all

Love life and live it lovingly!

Trust to let go!

When you dance with another, what matters most is the trust you place in yourself and your partner to dance as one unit, moving in synchrony and feeling the harmony of your beating hearts. This is the ideal connection that makes dance come alive in the moment.

Yet as much as trust is a much-needed trait in dancing as a couple, often trust takes time to build and is subjective amongst dancers.

To trust is to let go of doubt.

To trust is to allow space for growth.

To trust is to know patience in waiting.

To trust is to allow space for faith.

To trust another is not easy

For one and all.

To some, it may be very difficult.

But trust is certainly worth trying.

To trust takes effort, not assumptions.

It takes practice in time and space.

For trust can be on many levels

Emotional, mental, or physical.

Trust is built to evolve along

For in building the relationship

The foundation needs to endure

The winds of change.

Trust what trust does.

Try to pin it down.

Watch how it turns out to be

Confusing and elusive…

Before you trust, you will

Spend time sensing,

And witnessing the energy,

The tension in the transactions

Being ready for changes,

Being prepared to brave

Through disappointments and dissatisfactions

That may arise at any moment.

And yet…

Trust is not only about building

But about the ability to let go

Of worry and insecurities,

Fear and failures.

To trust is to reach out

Without any expectations

But in utter faith and belief

That you will be supported!

A dance between a couple is a blissful feeling only when there is trust in both the self and the other, just as much as the passion, as only when there is the letting go, can there be the flow manifesting itself through the movements.

Light of the Soul

A writers soul is found dancing in the letters as he writes.
A painters soul is found between the colours in the canvas
The potters soul is in his fingers shaping the clay passionately.

The singers soul is in the sounds created by the voice.
The dancers soul is flowing through in every movement made.
The Soul is a restless wanderer
It breathes free not in captivity,
But in every movement of creation.
It cannot be fathomed or even sensed
Other than in the light of passion in the being.

For then the soul shines in its own light
For it has found its purpose of being.

Celebrate Life… Live than just exist.

This note above has a true story that happened with me…. I have published it in my earlier article called the Magic of Movements.
This is one of those moments when writing and sharing stories from our lives bring us a deep sense of connection… with our readers and ourselves in gratitude for the learnings. And there is that sense of magic through words.
This is an old story but to me, but sharing it evokes the same poignant feeling of fond memories of the people that are attached to it

Here is the story if you would like to read.

The Magic of Movements

‘Life is a dance’….A painting by Savvy Raj

As a Dance Educator and a Creative MovementTrainer using Ballroom and Latin dances to improve health and well-being through various Dance for Wellness programs, it has been an enriching experience watching the learners revel in the simple joys of movement.

I have witnessed complete shifts in self esteem, confidence and agility among learners of all ages. But to cite a very recent instance …there is a small group of senior learners at one of my workshops who are gradually changing their mental makeup to being extremely enthusiastic about life and learning to dance. I still remember that Sunday morning about four years ago when I was almost through with teaching a Waltz class and I saw this slender, elderly elegant woman walking in and standing quietly, keenly watching the students who were practicing their steps from the sidelines. She was waiting to speak to me ….In that first moment of contact instinctively I knew there was an instant connection.. I gave her a listening ear and noticed she spoke softly and clearly . She said she was heading a group of Senior citizens she would like me to come over and meet the group and also teach them to dance . Her request seemed just right up my alley as I had been intending to conduct some workshops for seniors myself but hadn’t had the opportunity yet . This seemed as if my intentions were slowly finding a way to fulfillment . We fixed up that I would come over and meet them the following Monday at the local church where they all meet up for their weekly meeting . This I came to know later, was the only activity they had together every week .

Soon enough in a week or so I got a call from the lady who initiated it all saying that they need some time for permissions to use the same space of the church for the dance lessons . And that was that … nothing happened . Meanwhile I continued with my Dance workshops , and facilitated training’s of corporate clients . I would remember that meeting once in a while but left it to time to decide the outcome of that meeting.

A few years passed and I was returning back after finishing a children’s workshop in Chennai when I received her call again . Her clear and determined voice was cheerful and hopeful . She said she had two things to say , the seniors have agreed to join in and the church had given them the space to go ahead with the classes . Fantastic …. I knew in my heart it was no coincidence that it happened at all . After all the connects that we established that day were just moving to affirming itself !Well I got Godspeed on my side this time around … things moved on smoothly and we were well into rolling out the first class of Swing Dancing and more .

When I had first met up with them, I remember them huddled in chairs, quite apprehensive and some of them unsure about their ability to learn dancing . But today they have a spring in their step , glint in their eyes and a smile on their lips as they Swing and Cha Cha to their hearts content . And guess what… they love to dance the Merengue and Bachata too and are waiting to learn some more.So happy to have had the opportunity to make a difference in their lives.

The first time I met them they were a group with lots of concerns. They heard me patiently and asked a lot of questions , ranging from whether they would be able to learn at all as most of them were well over sixties and seventies or so .They also mentioned that though they have danced earlier in their lives, they don’t remember much. Some said they know all there is to know, a few others brought out their health issues which were bothering them so much that they cant possibly exercise let alone dance, some questioned what is the point of learning to dance …

Well to be frank I had an interesting and enjoyable time clearing their doubts and addressing their concerns . I knew most of their concerns were common to most people at their age in India.I spoke to them addressing each of their concerns and finally mentioning instances of my own intention of wanting to work with a group of Seniors.

The initially reluctant let their defenses down and an interactive session followed, where I got some understanding of them and they of me . It was one of those fulfilling days a wonderful memory now which I hold close to my heart .Though at the end all they said was that they will get back to me in some time…. somehow as I drove back home that evening I knew in my heart we were all certainly going to meet again in time .

Today as I write this its been six months and more.Dancing together they say they have realized the values of the human connection and the strength of community . They mention to me how they eagerly wait for their dance workshops .They speak of how dance steps into their lives , in moments of loneliness and makes them positive and alive again. They know dancing now is so much more about valuing that equal partnership between the leader and the follower and that the bonds of the dance floor leaves lasting and empowering impressions in their hearts and lives .

This experience as well as many similar incidents has left me even more confident about my beliefs …C ultivate Patience. Dream selflessly. Positive things are waiting to unfold if only we continue to dream our unique dream and believe in it ! All you need is the strength of intention and the dreams realizes itself , just trust in the process! Do what you do with all your heart ! Like minded people will arrive somehow and help you actualize it !

In this endeavor I take this opportunity to express my deep sense of appreciation to some of my dear students who assisted me at the workshops who took time out to be with me at these sessions and I know they shared with me equally the joys of making a positive difference in people’s lives.

You lead I follow : I lead you follow… Life is a dance!

Do you love to dance?

Do you enjoy leading a dance?

What makes a dance enjoyable?

Dance is a lot like life . Here I bring forth a few simple pointers on Partner Dancing.

pexels-photo-843256.jpeg

Important lessons in leadership are easily learned, on the dance floor…as you lead and as you follow.

They are very simple lessons and yet very powerful and contribute in making one a better dancer immediately. But more importantly it helps to know how to be a better leader in life too.

About two decades or more, Social dancing workshops and lessons in India were rarely common. We decided to do something about it and the Dance Concepts Latin &ballroom dance workshops began . We started with the basics :a Foxtrot , a Waltz , Jive , Rock n Roll and of course a Cha Cha Cha.

The idea was to teach as naturally and as simply as possible, so that the students made quick progress in learning the concepts of dancing rather than just a routine. Having had the privilege of sharing our social dancing skills with so many eager learners over the years we made a few observations … when the learners were learning the footwork side by side they would find it a breeze. But when we instructed them to join hands and dance together in an open hold some of them felt as if they were wrestling more than dancing with the lady pulling one way, while the man was pushing her another way Each had their ideas about how they should move and how it would look.

Social Dancing is a partnership, a partnership where there is a leader and a follower. Even if you don’t like to follow, to dance well together it is wise to respect the partnership rules. Learning to follow is a skill that one needs to develop and is not necessarily easy. It’s difficult as you have to do the same thing your partner is doing, except backward.

Just as important, you have to follow his lead even if it seems as if he’s going the wrong way. And thus if one learns to lead well, the partner may actually enjoy the feeling of being led than feeling yanked and shoved around.

Traditionally the man takes the lead on the dance floor. Yes, in ballroom dancing – even in these days -mostly the man leads. But roles can be and are reversed as well. After all it takes two to tango… if one leads the other follows.

Being a leader is more about sensitivity and definitely not about pushing your partner around, but to lead well, it is necessary to develop spatial awareness so you know exactly where your partner is at every moment, which foot their weight is balanced on without looking. You have to be aware of their pacing, and be mindful of the strengths, and weaknesses. And you have to take all that into consideration every time you move with a partner in your arms.

A good leader connects than controls.

Savvy

Sense what you are going to do before you do it. Just be aware of what your next step is going to be, and give your partner the signal at the right time so they can follow you gracefully. Like so in life: Having some foresight of what your life should become is like knowing what type of dance you want to do. But being a good leader requires more of you than that. It demands that you also have good ideas about the medium- and short-term tasks that are required to achieve that vision. And it means you have to communicate those ideas to your partners – those who are working closely with you to achieve your vision.

When dancing together it is very important to …

Signal your intentions with clarity. To lead well, and the way to avoid using force is to give strong, clear signals. The clearer your signals are, the easier it is to follow you. And the easier it is for your partner to follow you, the better you will look and feel together and the better they will like dancing with you.

In life: knowing what you want from your partners, colleagues etc is not enough. You have to let them know what you want them to do by communicating it to them with clarity. And most of all you have to develop the art of patience.

Lead to demonstrate your partner’s strengths. In dancing, the purpose of the leader is to lead – but the purpose of the dance itself is to enjoy the moment with your partner, each focusing on the bringing the best of each others strengths than the weaknesses…

Wise leaders hardly blame the follower when things go haphazard , which it might at times! After all exhilaration and excitement are a stones throw away from comfort zones that one might trespass at times , yet when ever the leader and the follower work in harmony … it is magnetic and mesmerizing indeed! It is then a dance beyond all expectations!

When the heart dances…

When the heart dances

The body moves

The spirit sings

The soul senses

It doesn’t matter what dance you love …. what matters is that your heart loves to dance 🙂
