The Art & The Artist

The above clip is my dedication to my dear mother. They are a compilation from her own set of artworks dated around 55 years back in time or more.

The reason I share this is to encourage people to see possibilities in creativity and how it can soulfully connect us all, through creative enrichments.

To give you the background…my mother had and still has a fine sense of design and her drawings always had an artistic flow. But unfortunately the daily grind of life and living took its toll and art and creativity was pushed into the background perhaps not realizing the innate talents. But the truth is, a lot happens in appreciation than in indifference.

So her skills were lying untapped and unrecognized. In time as I grew up and while on a visit to my maternal grandparents home in the village, I chanced upon her collection of drawings and paintings stacked in the attic gathering dust in complete ignorance.

The moment I saw them I knew they have to be brought out to see the light of the day… although sadly it was personally disheartening, to see many of the beautiful pieces made on paper, crackling and crumbling in time.

IMG_4173

I brought them back with me to the city and took pictures of what was left of it and tried to salvage it piecing them together.

By then I was encouraged by friends and relatives who saw and deeply appreciated them too.

I hit upon the idea of creating a video clip using technology to enhance her original design sense. Yes, they are not as good as her original artworks, for technology is way too perfect to bring out the joy of uniqueness in the human hand.

Yet it is my humble attempt to value the time spent in creating by her own hand with the limitations of the resources available to her in those times.

There are far too many paintings, so I pieced them like a kaleidoscope of sorts to get a sense of her artistic endeavours.

Many times we fail to see the hidden talents in our loved ones. We relate with them for years and hardly know the depth of who they truly are.

Art has a way of bringing out the brilliance of the light within us by bridging gaps in our understandings but also opening new perspectives of thinking.

Today is the day I was born, and one of the ways I choose to celebrate it, is by dedicating this post to my dear mother Anjana.

Thank you, mom, for the beauty you create, being who you are! God bless.

On Sharing Beyond Limits

A beautiful video came my way today

Please do watch it fully.

There is so much of learning in sharing

But when you share beyond your comfort.

When you give beyond your means.

When you choose to care beyond your own abilities.

When you help irrespective of your disabilities.

When your action speaks much of kindness emanating from the heart

You choose to make light of your own discomfort.

You have surpassed all human foibles

You show the strength of your true character through your compassionate ways.

Art of Management

Team Management

Management calls for special skillsets but with changing times the skills have much to do with empathy in people management. Every head of department faces different sets of difficult situations but most common to all is getting the work done by the team effectively increasing productivity with the available resources.

You are improving your team every time you incorporate the following ways

1. When you talk less, and are listening more.

2 . When you begin to delegate work to the right team members and increase the sense of responsibility in them.

3.When you are able to speak assertively with confidence and empathy than simply ordering people around.

4. When you are able to analyze and share appraisals to resolve and find solutions in a non judgmental manner.

5. When you are able to steer and guide them in their endeavors without overtaking the joy of effort.

6. When you practising collaborating with your team instead of trying to be the controlling one.

Every team is unique as the people in it and this makes it uniquely interesting to manage as well.

Appreciation Matters.

“A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by, and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace, and stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping, and continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, on a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.

Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste, and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?”

Empathy Matters

Today’s ever changing corporate environment calls for new kinds of people management skills.
From managing teams to peoples problems and handling customer service,an empathetic approach helps create a positive difference and transform work culture.

So what is empathy after all?
Empathy is about being able to perceive and understand another’s point of view using their frame of reference.

To sense the flow of the moment with another.
To communicate with & be able to understand another’s perspectives insecurities and pain points.

Empathy is a positive approach aimed at improving teamwork and building teams , bridges gaps of communication implementing changes through appreciation, support & encouragement than unnerving others with negativity & criticism that can be rather demoralizing.

Empathy can create and build trust and rapport that you can tap into. In using empathic responses, problems can find meaningful and lasting solutions.

In using empathy with skill, you show respect & value for another.

There is a huge wave of empathy oriented approaches in businesses across the world. This is truly valuable and must be encouraged.

After all empathy is a main contender in a list of skills that show emotional intelligence quotient of an individual.

Waltzing on ice.

Can you waltz on ice?
When winters turn grim and cold
Can you create joy and cheer?
Even in moments of melancholy.

Can you see a silver lining of hope?
In the dark dreary night to help you cope
Can you see beauty in every dusk and dawn?
Letting go of fear & doubts in the twilight hours.

Can you instill trust in another & move in faith?
Inspite of not knowing the way as yet.
Can you believe you can lead the way?
Inspite of being in a maze in the now.

Verily you are stable in balance

And you have taken your stance.

Clearly then you are dancing in this moment.
Clearly you are waltzing on ice.

Sweet moments.

Sometimes life gives you beautiful memories where you least expect it from.
Or maybe all happens for a reason.
We were meant to meet!

A month back, work took me all the way to China. And while some industry visits were happening as scheduled, a  small moment of connection and conversation resulted in great joy and camaraderie.
Met some very beautiful and loving hearts. We warmed up almost instantly with each other. We shared much about our cultures, our food and traditions.
We spoke to each other from the heart all with the help of a translator app.
It was such a beautiful flowing conversation. We circumvented language barriers although I spoke in English into the app and them in Chinese. It hardly came in the way. By the end of it what mattered was the joy that emerged. The beautiful moments shared will always be treasured in my heart.

Thankful to the useful translator app that made it so simple. And helped create fond memories of that day!

Heaven knows

Came across this beautiful picture share

And couldn’t help take a second glance

Credits go to the photographer fully for this amazing photograph.

Leaving me to question in awe

Is this a piece of heaven on earth?

Leading me to another question

Is heaven in a piece of your soul

Sought to be sighted in some faraway land?

Perhaps it’s nearer home.

Not milky ways away.

Heaven is the gasp of breath you take.

Heaven is in the tree of life.

Heaven is full of hope and wonder.

Heaven grounds you home or leaves you awestruck.

Heaven speaks from the heart.

For heaven knows …

Have you found your piece of heaven?

Trust yourself you will know it.

Power Of Love

Love is one of the most natural and yet the most complex of emotions

Where true love is, peace walks in…

Love is the unison of the heart & mind.

Love makes the world go around.

Love speaks beyond borders

Love leaves impressions in eternity

Love is a gift of nature.

Love is kind and giving.

Love is an expression of life.

Love emits confidence and ease

Love evokes positive creativity.

Yet…

Love is blind & beyond discernment

Love sees things for itself.

Love moulds itself in feeling &emotions

Love clouds the rational mind.

Yet…

Love changes the equation.

Love can mend the broken heart

Love hurts and heals.

Love cares and cures as well.

Love has many forms and shapes.

Love is the innate power of life.

Love can alter the course of life.

Love is life, well-lived.

Love is meant to evolve life.

Where love flows, life nourishes itself.

What is life without love?

Live life lovingly!

Solitude: A road to stillness?

AN ARTIST’S RELATION TO SOLITUDE
An artist must make time for the long periods of solitude
Solitude is extremely important
Away from home
Away from the studio
Away from family
Away from friends
An artist should stay for long periods of time at waterfalls
An artist should stay for long periods of time at exploding volcanoes
An artist should stay for long periods of time looking at fast-running rivers
An artist should stay for long periods of time looking at the horizon where the ocean and sky meet
An artist should stay for long periods of time looking at the stars in the night sky

Marina Abramovic

I loved the poem enough to share it, yet felt there is something much deeper to reflect there.

Is solitude the road to stillness … afterall there is often stillness in the movements and movement in the stillness as well.

So I would like to ask an artist…

Do you really want solitude or stillness ?

Sometimes in deep solitude there is no stillness.

And that is perhaps the reason for the need of staying away from it all.

Staying away is not the answer but just a change to alter and arrange thoughts.

For thoughts run amuck sometimes and have a speed all their own

Perhaps the need of the moment is being still

To witness the tides as they rise and recede.

Stillness is amidst it all in your hearts

Not in some far away place.

Then anytime you are free to…

Walk in to your own special place.

Art happens out of nowhere

It has no specific time to arrive

In the busiest of moments

Arises an insight

To write to paint and draw

It tugs on your heart to create itself.

It sees no day or night

No reason to appear or disappear

In fact art is living in every moment

Waiting for us to manifest it.

Life teaches you learn.

Came across this profoundly touching and valuable take on life and how it teaches us lessons in living.

Sharing it here today.

A poem by
Jorge Luis Borges

You learn…

I checked about this poet and learned more about him on Wikipedia….
Jorge Luis Borges Acevedo was an Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet and translator, and a key figure in Spanish-language and universal literature.

If you interested here are some of his other works… Short stories: The Aleph, The Library of Babel, The South, The End, The Garden of Forking Paths,

To write is to express

And emote your feelings…

To read is to explore

And experience the writers work

Every time…

In the sharing is the learning.

A writer can speak much with a few words

Or wax eloquent with charming flourishes.

Whatever the way whenever it touches the heart…

There is something acknowledged.

Sometimes great learnings happen in the sharings.

When life imitates Art

The path of art is open to interpretation. Creativity per se is a birthing process. It can be extremely exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.

The creator is bearing the brunt of creativity just as much as the beauty of it all.
Creativity is challenging and comforting.
It can box then unbox you as an artist.

When creativity churns out art it opens itself to perspectives and dimensions of reflections.
Art appears in all its magnificence from the
seemingly endearing and enchanting…
It has its influences on the heart and mind of the audience as much as the artist.
Art may then touch upon the purpose of artistry.
Or it may completely stay undermined and undiscovered.

Yet the truth is Art has far-reaching potential and the artist is capable of inspiring or influencing through his creation. And the same art can transform or trick the mind.

Every creation has a time frame that goes along,
Sometimes the creation is self-destructive.
Or at times creation may become redundant in time and fade away
Yet there are cases of creative expression where interpretations leave imprints in the human consciousness forever.

Art has a unique capacity to transform the psyche of understanding.
Art reflects the life and at times life reflects art.

Art of Acceptance

True learning happens when we realize we are the teacher and we are the student.

And life teaches the greatest lessons without anyone uttering a word or at times in just the sheer presence of a good soul.

Likewise, as we live from our heart and open ourselves to realization and acceptance of new possibilities… true living happens!
